Soda Bread

Ingredients

  • 5 cups of flour
  • 2 1/2 cups of buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Directions

  1. First, you'll need to preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Get two baking sheets ready by greasing them lightly (you can use one large baking sheet instead, if you have one on hand)
  3. In a large bowl, stir together all the dry ingredients (flour, rolled oats, baking soda and salt)
  4. Now it's time to add buttermilk, stirring it in gently until a soft dough is formed
  5. Knead the dough very lightly, then divide it into four pieces
  6. Form each of the pieces into rounded flat loaves and place them on the baking sheet
  7. Before you stick the baking sheet in the oven, make sure to cut 'X' on top of each loaf
  8. Checking to see if the bread is ready to take out.
  9. Bake the bread for about 30 to 45 minutes (the baking time can vary depending on the oven, so make sure to check on the bread regularly to avoid burning it).
  10. The bread is ready when it turns golden brown

*Cook's note: This is a simple recipe for delicious Irish Soda Bread! Just slice up some cheese and get the butter (yummy!) and you're all set!

  • To make sure that the bread is ready, stick a toothpick into one of the loaves - if it's dry when you take it out, the bread is ready. If it has wet dough stuck to it, you'll need to wait a little longer.
  • The Irish Soda Bread tastes best when it's warm, so you might want to bake it shortly before the party
  • The oven does get hot
