Choosing an Officiant for Your Wedding

Who will ask you and your partner if you "do"?

1. Ask friends, family and wedding professionals for recommendations.

2. Look in the phone book under "Churches," "Weddings" or specific religions. Call your city hall or marriage license bureau for civil referrals.

3. Some churches might require you to join before hosting your wedding.

4. Consider the traditions, religious ceremony, interfaith wedding, military wedding or a civil ceremony.

5. Your Officiant should be supportive of your pending union.

6. Take the time to meet with prospective officiants. Clearly convey your needs and priorities.

7. Don't be afraid to take notes about wedding requirements, restrictions and fees. You will find these invaluable as you narrow your choices.

8. If you have decided on an off-site ceremony, will the officiant be able to make it?

9. Ask to see referrals from other couples.

10. Check the officiant's availability on the date of your ceremony.
